Description

The dataset Madrid. List of People Executed in the Post-Civil-War Years (1939-1944) with 2,933 case-files, is taken from research into the identities of the people who, during the post-war period, were executed by firing squads in front of the walls of the Cementerio del Este, also known as the Cementerio de la Almudena, or who were executed in prisons but buried in the cemetery. The research was commissioned by the Office of Human Rights and Historical Memory of the City Council of Madrid (Oficina de Derechos Humanos y Memoria del Ayuntamiento de Madrid) and took as its starting-point the book Consejo de Guerra. Los fusilamientos en el Madrid de la posguerra (1939-1945) , by Mirta Núñez Díaz-Balart y Antonio Rojas Friend. This book listed 2,663 victims as a result of analysis of the burial books and the burial orders of the cemetery. A team of researchers, led by Fernando Hernández Holgado and composed of Juan Carlos García Funes, Manuel García Muñoz, Fernando Jiménez Herrera, Tomás Montero Aparicio, Daniel Oviedo Silva and Santiago Vega Sombría was given fresh access to the original documents which enabled them to revise the lists and add to them. They have also used the valuable work of memoriaylibertad.org who published and updated the list of those executed as a result of their own investigations and other information based upon testimonies and documents provided by families of the victims. In addition the Information on women who were executed by firing squads in the cemetery has been taken from the lists of prisoners from the two women’s prisons, the Carcel de Ventas and the Carcel Claudio Coello, who were executed in the city of Madrid between 1939 and 1943 and the report Las cifras de fusiladas del cementerio del Este en Madrid (1939-1943).
