Víctimas enterradas en el Valle de los Caídos

This dataset of victims of the Civil War who are buried in the so-called “Valle de los Caídos” or Valley of the Fallen, includes over 20,000 records. It comes from a list derived from the Mapa de Fosas del Ministerio de Justicia by nomesevoces.net , which is a joint-university research project on the Civil War and the Francoist repression in Galicia. The list contains the names which appear in the registers of the Abbey of Santa Cruz in the Valle de los Caídos . These registers form a record of those whose remains were deposited here between 17 March 1959 and 3 July 1983. According to the Abadía , the exact number of victims involved is not known, and is probably much higher than the number listed in the registers. However, the registers contain the names of 33,833 people, victims from both sides of the conflict, whose remains were transferred here in 491 collections between 1959 and 1983 from graves and cemeteries from all of the provinces of Spain, apart from Orense, La Coruña, Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. At the Valle de los Caídos they were reburied in columbarium niches in some cases individually, in other cases in groups. Although the remains of 21,423 victims are identified, those of 12,410 are not. In many cases, the remains were transferred without the consent – or even the knowledge – of their families, especially in the cases of victims from the republican side. These lists are also published on the website of the Asociación para la Recuperación de la Memoria Histórica (ARMH) .
